Wealdstone 0 - 1 Heybridge Swifts
The Stones were knocked out of the Ryman League Cup last night at the quarter-final stage in a match they should have won after creating several good chances. However they lacked the clinical finish and Heybridge took advantage to score the winner two minutes into extra-time.
Heybridge had the first chance of the match in the first five minutes when a 30-yard shot was superbly tipped over the bar, by Stones keeper, Keita Karamoko. Stones loan signing from Watford, Liam Henderson showed great pace and skill on the ball which resulted in a stunning shot from the edge of the penalty area that just went over the bar. If the shot would have been on target, the Heybridge keeper would not have had any chance of saving the ball. A minute later, the ball was chipped through to Peter Dean who ran on and his shot was well saved by the Heybridge keeper.
The score remained goalless at half-time.
Early in the second half, Peter Dean should have put the Stones in front when at the far post he managed to screw the ball wide of the goal with a left foot shot which should have hit the target.
In the 57th minute a superb long throw from Lee Chappell, was headed back across the goal by a Heybridge defender but there was no Stones player at the far post to apply the finishing touch. Carl Martin who has been injured recently came on as substitute for Andre Delisser.
Later, Dean ran through and hit a shot from an acute angle but his shot was brilliantly saved and gathered by Morris-Sanders in the Heybridge goal who was excellent all night and was probably Heybridge's man-of- the-match.
The match went into extra-time and the inevitable happened after all the chances that the Stones created. In fact, just two minutes into extra-time, Heybridge broke away and the ball was played through to a Heybridge striker who did well to lob the ball over Karamoko into the net. Carl Martin who came on as a second half substitute was himself substituted by Stephen Hughes.
Two minutes later, Ryan Ashe put a very strong challenge in on ex-Stones player Gary Burrell. The referee yellow-carded Ashe.
The Stones continued to try and grab the equaliser which would have sent the match into a penalty shoot-out and right at the end of the first half of extra time, Graeme Montgomery hit a superb left footed shot that was brilliantly saved by the Heybridge keeper.
Heybridge held on to secure a semi-final place in the Ryman League Cup and Stones are left to consider the fact that although they played some good football at times and created several good chances the ball did not run for them and they lacked that clinical finish. It was felt that if the Stones would have scored in the first half from the chances that they created, they would have gone on to win convincingly.
