Wealdstone 1 - 0 Ashford Town (Middx)

The Stones won through to the quarter-finals of the Ryman League Cup with a narrow 1-0 win tonight, thanks to an 89th minute goal by Stephen Hughes who had only come as a substitute, five minutes earlier.

The Stones started the match with quite a strong line-up and included at right-back, Robert Rice, the on-loan signing from Wycombe Wanderers who was making his home debut. Also Andre Delisser played up-front with Peter Dean.

The match started at quite a fast pace with Ashford initially looking like they were going to overrun the Stones. However the Stones then settled down and their first chance in the 18th minute saw Peter Dean hitting the bar after a lovely through pass from Ryan Ashe. In the 24th minute, Delisser threaded a pass into the path of Graeme Montgomery who leashed a fierce shot from an acute angle which was brilliantly saved by the Ashford keeper. On 37 minutes, Montgomerry should have done much better when he struck a right-foot shot from well inside the penalty area that should have hit the target but instead just went past the left-hand post. After creating three good chances, Ashford nearly went in at half-time with a lead when from a corner, they hit the bar from a header. The score remained goalless at half-time.

Early in the second half, Karamoko made an excellent save from a header. In the 60th minute the Stones could have taken the lead when Peter Dean latched onto a through ball, chipped the ball over the keeper but the ball went agonisingly wide of the post. With seven minutes left Ryan Ashe was brought down on the edge of the penalty area and from the resultant free-kick, the keeper made a good save at the foot of his left-hand post. With two minutes left, Karamoko made a good save from a well-hit shot and then with a minute left on the clock, Ryan Ashe did brilliantly well on the right by beating two defenders and then laid the ball into Stephen Hughes who controlled the ball well, swivelled and hit a right-foot shot from an acute angle under the keeper and into the net.
